In 1837, the Grimm brothers, together with five fellow professors at the University of Göttingen, participated in a protest against the nullification of the Hannover state's free constitution by King Ernst August I. This group of protesters is known throughout Germany as the Seven-Göttingen Group (Die Göttinger Sieben). All members of the group were subsequently fired from the university, three of which were expelled from Hannover including Jacob Grimm. Jacob and Wilhelm returned to live with his brother Ludwig for about a year, then went to Berlin at the invitation of Prussian King.
